Crop diversification refers to the addition of new crops or cropping systems to agricultural production systems. Crop diversification, as opposed to monoculture, is a rational and cost-effective method for enhancing the resilience of agricultural systems (Lin 2011). Diversification can help suppress pest outbreaks and disease transmission, while providing more a diverse income stream for farmers, and food supply. Despite these benefits, uptake has been relatively slow due to economic incentives promoting production of a few certain crops, and the belief that monocultures are more productive compared to more diverse systems (Lin 2011).
