Certification is a formal process of verifying that a process or commodity meets agreed environmental and social standards. While environmental certification schemes for products such as organic coffee, timber, and other valuable agricultural commodities are increasingly becoming widespread (Blackman and Naranjo 2012), climate change related certification is still in its infancy (FAO, 2013). Certification can help improve the environmental performance of commodity producers even where state oversight is weak. However, environmentally beneficial impacts are low if certification schemes only end up selecting producers that are already meeting standards (Blackman and Naranjo 2012).
